Hydrogen Storage Device
This system can safely store and discharge hydrogen at user defined flow rates and pressures up to 300 psi with a storage density equivalent to liquid hydrogen and an estimated minimum lifetime of 2,000 charge/discharge cycles. The use of aluminum foam enhances heat transfer during charging and discharging and allows metal hydride particles to expand and contract, preventing clogging. System capacity can be enlarged by manifolding multiple modules together.

Market Assessment
Worldwide demand for alternate energy sources is rapidly growing due to environmental concerns, trade imbalances,
energy self-sufficiency, and fossil fuel depletion. A recent market study conducted by Ballard Power Systems, Inc., projects the global hydrogen market at $10 billion in 2010 and $150 billion in 2020. To support widespread use of hydrogen, stationary storage at user facilities and refueling stations will be needed.

Patent Status
U.S. Patent Nos. 6,015,041; 6,267,229; and 6,432,379 have been issued on this invention. European Patent EP 0891 294 also has been granted. A Canadian patent is pending.

Stage of Development
This device was used to store hydrogen to power a public transit vehicle in Augusta, Ga., in a 1997 demonstration. A second
prototype, used to power an industrial fuel cell vehicle, was demonstrated in 2001
and 2002.
