Building SRS meant about 6,000 people had to be relocated from their homes in six towns and several small communities.

Construction Begins at SRSConstruction Begins at SRS
The site began in July 1950. Soon, a construction force numbering more than 38,000 was at work. The amount of steel used was equal to a train 38 miles long.

Nuclear Reactors Built to Produce Tritium & Plutonium
During the early 1950's SRS began to produce materials used in nuclear weapons, primarily tritium and plutonium-239. Five reactors were built to produce nuclear materials.

Canyons Built to Process Fuel Rods
Irradiated materials were moved from the reactors to one of the two chemical separations plants. In these facilities, known as "canyons," the irradiated fuel and target assemblies were chemically processed to separate useful products from waste.
