McClure and His Dogs Headed for World Competition in Canine Training
William “Bill” McClure’s (SRNS Nuclear Materials) love for and interest in dogs, especially German Shepherds, led him to pursue a new hobby. After enrolling his dog in an obedience school 26 years ago, Bill became interested in the sport of Schutzhund (protection dog). Schutzhund is made up of three phases: tracking, obedience and protection. Bill became a member of United Schutzhund Club of America and the German Shepherd Dog Club of America-Working Dog Association (GSDCA-WDA), and later formed a Schutzhund Club locally.
Bill not only trains these dogs, but also enters them into competitions. Bill’s third place award in the 2007 GSDCA-WDA National Championship qualified him to represent the United States at the World Championship in Bratislava, Slovakia. Bill’s most recent accomplishments were in February when he won the USCA Southeast Regional Championship with honors of the highest scoring Handler/Owner Trained Dog, and he scored “High” in “Trial.”
