U.S. Forest Service - Savannah River
Visitor Information

The Savannah River Site (SRS) is a controlled-access Federal facility.
When you approach an SRS barricade, pull to the highway median and check in with security personnel at their station. Temporary visitor badges are not available before 8:00 a.m.

Security will need to:

  • Know the nature of your visit
  • Who you are visiting (U.S Forest Service, phone #725-2441)
  • Check your driver's license (and driver licenses or other valid identification of passengers)
  • Know your car tag number
  • Ask if you are U.S. citizen*, age, SS#, and if you have any contraband (see below).
  • Inspect your vehicle. Please physically open car doors, glove compartments, and any boxes or containers within your vehicle.

Contraband includes:

  • Weapons and Simulated Weapons: A weapon is defined as any article or devise that is usually used for the infliction of serious bodily injury or death. Weapons include firearms, bows and arrows, cross-bows, and martial arts weapons
  • Ammunition and/or Incendiaries: Examples are shotgun shells, rifle and handgun ammunition, and fireworks
  • Explosive Materials and/or Devices: Examples are dynamite, blasting caps, grenades, or any item or configuration of items that could cause an explosion.
  • Alcoholic Beverages: Examples are beer, wine, wine coolers, liquor, or other beverages containing alcohol intended for human consumption.
  • Chemical Irritants: Examples are tear gas, chemical mace, or any devise containing the chemical agents CN, CS, or other chemical irritants.
  • Controlled Substances: Controlled substances in the possession of a person without a valid prescription are considered contraband.
  • Drug Paraphernalia: Examples are hypodermic needles and syringes, cocaine spoons and vials, roach clips and pipes designed or intended for use with marijuana, hashish, hashish oil or cocaine.
  • Stun Guns, Explosive Tools and/Ammunition: Stun guns are small devises that generate an electric shock

After your vehicle inspection and clearance, proceed slowly through the barricade. Please hold up your new visitor's badge for Security to see, who will then wave you through.
If you are coming through the Aiken barricade at the north end of SRS (a southern continuation of SC Highway 19, or Whiskey Road), the Forest Service is on your left hand side approximately one mile from the barricade. After you turn off the main highway into the Forest Service compound, the principal conference rooms are in the first large building on your right. However, if you wish to go the principal administrative office, take the 3rd right-hand turn for visitor parking directly across from the administrative offices.
  • For more information on SRS badging requirements, please call at 803-725-2441. (TTY: 725-6360)
